At our Summer Award Lunch on 11 June 2025 we were delighted to present this year’s award to Thornbury Radio.
Thornbury Radio started out as Thornbury FM in 2005, a small station broadcasting to just Thornbury. In 2010 it became GLOSS FM, an online community radio station for Thornbury and District. However, after an unsuccessful licence bid for a permanent FM frequency the station was forced to close in 2011. After a six-year break and several attempts to restart it, the station relaunched in 2017 and rebranded to Thornbury Radio in 2021. The station added FM across much of South Glos that year and DAB in 2024.
The station aims to deliver high-quality, relevant programming. While the big commercial stations go increasingly regional and national, Thornbury Radio continues to highlight truly local news, events and causes in and around Thornbury. It spotlights local organisations, gets to grips with local issues and supports community development through frequent on-air mentions, sponsorship and campaigns.
We are happy to give this award to Thornbury Radio for its valuable contribution to the local community.
We suffered a great loss in January 2011 when our chairman, Alan Hudson, died suddenly.
Alan joined the management committee of the Thornbury Volunteer Centre, formerly the Thornbury & District Volunteer Link, when it was created in 1988, and remained chairman for more than sixteen years.
In memory of him, we decided to create The Alan Hudson Award for Volunteering Achievement.
It is awarded annually and celebrates the work of an individual or group who, in the opinion of the Thornbury Volunteer Centre, has made a valuable contribution to the local community.
